How To Dip | Troubleshooting Tips

Dip Powder Application Steps:

You'll need:

  • 3 step dip powder liquids set (base coat, activator, and top coat)
  • cuticle pusher 
  • nail buffer
  • nail duster brush 
  • toothpick or cuticle precision tool
  • dip powder color of your choice
  • clear dip powder to encapsulate
  • 100/180 grit nail file to shape nails
  • lint free wipes or paper towel
  • cuticle oil

Step 1: Prep Your Nails

Before starting, you need to prepare your nails by trimming and filing them to your desired shape. Use a buffer GENTLY to remove the shine from your nails and make sure they're clean and dry. Push back your cuticles with a cuticle pusher, and clean up any excess with a cuticle tool.

Step 2: Apply a Base Coat

Start by applying a thin layer of base coat on your nails. Make sure to apply it evenly and avoid getting it on your cuticles. Then dip your nails into the powder, and tap your finger to get the excess powder off. Repeat this process for all your nails one by one.

Step 3: Repeat the Process

Repeat step 2 until you have reached your desired thickness and opacity. 

Step 4: Encapsulate

Use a clear dip powder to encapsulate to protect the color or glitter from filing.

Step 5: Activate

Once you've reached desired thickness and opacity, it's time to seal it. Apply a generous layer of the activator, and let it dry for a 2 minutes.

Step 6: File and Buff

Using a buffer, buff your nails to smooth out any lumps or bumps and get your desired shape with a nail file. Repeat this step until your nails are smooth.

Step 5: Apply Dip Top Coat

Apply a QUICK, thin layer of the top coat in 3 strokes and wait a minute. After the minute is up, apply a more detailed second coat. Let the top coat dry for 2-3  minutes. Then, apply cuticle oil. Voila! Your dip powder nails are ready to go!

 

Troubleshooting:

Dip powder nails are becoming an increasingly popular nail enhancement option due to their durability, easy application, and range of colors and finishes. However, like any nail treatment, dip powder can sometimes present issues during the application process or after they have been applied. Here are some common troubleshooting issues and their solutions:

Issue #1: The manicure won't last longer than a few days

Solution: Make sure your nails are clean and dry before applying the base coat. Avoid touching your nails with your fingertips after applying the base coat, as the natural oils from your skin can make the powder not adhere properly. If the issue persists, try applying a bond or primer to the nails before the base coat.

Issue #2: The powder is clumping or not applying evenly

Solution: Tap off excess powder before applying each coat, and be sure to brush off any loose powder before applying the activator. If the issue persists, try using different liquids for your next manicure. Make sure your layers of base liquid is thin for each layer. If it is a thick base, the chances of the powder clumping on the nail is much higher.

Issue #3: The nails are lumpy or bumpy

Solution: Use a buffer or file to smooth out any bumps or lumps before applying the top coat.

Issue #4: The dip powder is cracking or peeling off

Solution: Your layers may not be enough. Try adding a few more layers or fortifying with clear dip to avoid cracking or peeling off Make sure you have an apex that helps strengthen the manicure as well. Avoid excessive water exposure or harsh chemicals, as this can cause the dip powder to lift and peel.

Issue #5: The dip powder is lifting at the edges or cuticles

Solution:  Avoid getting the powder or activator on the skin, as this can cause lifting. This issue also coincides with issue #1 as well. Using a protein bond before starting your manicure can help as well.
